United Airlines flight loses 28,000 feet in 8 minutes following ‘pressurization problem’

A flight ofUnited Airlines bound for Rome returned to New Jersey shortly after midnight on Thursday “to deal with a possible loss of cabin pressure,” according to an airline statement.

Tracking site data FlightAware show that the plane descended rapidly for approximately 8 minutes from 37,000 feet at 10:07 p.m. to just below 9,000 feet at 10:15 p.m. United Airlines Flight 510 returned safely to Newark Liberty International Airport around 12:25 a.m. Thursday after the crew reported a “pressurization problem,” according to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration. Pilots often descend quickly to lower altitudes when they are concerned about the plane’s pressurization.

The airline reported that the crew received an indication of a possible loss of cabin pressure. The plane landed, there was never any loss of pressure in the cabin said United Airlines. A replacement 777-200 transported the 270 passengers to Rome with a delay of 6 hours 15 minutes.
