Tourism: ancient monuments to visit in Rome

Rome is a city rich in history and monuments of antiquity. Here are some of the must-see sites to visit:

  1. The Coliseum (Flavian Amphitheater): This is one of the best preserved amphitheaters of antiquity and one of the most iconic symbols of Rome. It could accommodate up to 80,000 spectators for gladiator fights and other spectacles.

  2. The Roman Forum : It was the political, religious and commercial center of ancient Rome. It is surrounded by impressive ruins, including the Temple of Saturn, the House of the Vestal Virgins and the Arch of Septimius Severus.

  3. The pantheon : This temple is famous for its impressive dome and innovative architectural design. It was built to honor all the gods of ancient Rome.

  4. Trajan’s Forum : This is an extension of the Roman Forum built by Emperor Trajan. There you can see Trajan’s Column, which recounts the military exploits of the emperor.

  5. The Circus Maximus : It was a huge stadium for chariot races and other sporting competitions. It could accommodate around 150,000 spectators.

  6. The Baths of Caracalla : These public baths were among the largest in Roman Antiquity. They were used for bathing, exercise and as a social center.

  7. The Arch of Constantine : Located near the Colosseum, it commemorates the victory of Emperor Constantine during the Battle of Milvian Bridge.

  8. The Mausoleum of Augustus : It is the mausoleum of Emperor Augustus, founder of the Roman Empire. Although partially destroyed, it remains an important historical site.

  9. The Circus of Maxentius : This is another stadium for chariot races located on Via Appia, near Palatine.

  10. The Arch of Titus : This triumphal arch commemorates the victory of Emperor Titus during the capture of Jerusalem in 70 AD.

  11. The Catacombs of Rome : Although located outside the city center, they are a fascinating example of Roman funerary architecture.

Don’t forget to take the time to wander the streets of Rome, as you will discover many ancient remains even outside of these main sites. Also enjoy the museums, where many pieces of ancient art and artifacts are on display.
