Tourism: ancient monuments to visit in Athens

Athens is a city rich in history and culture, with many monuments of antiquity to visit. Here are some of the most iconic sites:

  1. The Acropolis : It is the most famous site in Athens and one of the most important in the ancient world. It is home to several ancient buildings and structures, including the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, the Temple of Athena Nike and the Propylaea.

  2. The Parthenon : This Doric temple dedicated to the goddess Athena is one of the most perfect examples of classical Greek architecture. It is located at the top of the Acropolis.

  3. The Erechtheion : A temple located on the Acropolis, dedicated to Athena and Poseidon. It is famous for its Caryatids, statues of women serving as columns.

  4. The temple of Athena Nike : A small temple located on the right side of the entrance to the Acropolis, dedicated to the goddess of victory, Athena Nike.

  5. The Propylaea : This is the great entrance gate to the Acropolis, designed by the architect Mneson of Phlionte.

  6. The Olympiaion (or Temple of Olympian Zeus) : One of the largest temples of ancient Greece, dedicated to Zeus. It is located near the center of Athens.

  7. The ancient Agora : The heart of public and political life in Greek Antiquity. There are temples, administrative buildings and gathering places.

  8. The Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro) : A stadium built entirely of marble, which hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896.

  9. The Theater of Dionysus : An ancient open-air theater located at the foot of the Acropolis, where Greek tragedies and comedies were performed during the Dionysus festivals.

  10. The Acropolis Museum : Although not an ancient monument per se, it houses an incredible collection of artifacts from the Acropolis and surrounding sites.
