The Catalan hotel group, which currently has 10 hotels in four countries (Spain, Germany, United States and Cuba), will open a hotel for the LGBTQ+ community in 2025. These hotels also claim to be hetero friendly.
To the ten hotels owned by the hotel chain, four new hotels will be added, one on the island of Madeira, in Valencia, in Bilbao and another hotel in Porto which is scheduled to open in 2024.
The future Axel Hotel Porto will be located on Avenida dos Aliados
That is, the establishment will be very close to the main tourist attractions and leisure areas of the city. The hotel will have 80 rooms and different leisure, gastronomy and relaxation areas with a lounge bar, a restaurant, a wellness area with fitness and spa, and a sky bar on the roof of the building.
This asset will mark the chain’s foray into Portugal and, like the rest of its hotels, aims to make it the meeting point for the city’s LGBTIQ+ community.
Porto is a gay friendly city
“Currently, Portugal is considered one of the safest countries for the LGBTIQ+ community, and Porto stands out for being one of the best gay-friendly cities in the country,” the leaders say in a statement .
Gays and lesbians remain discreet in the streets of Porto but are less reserved in the many gay-friendly clubs, which are concentrated around the Jardim da Cordoaria. Gay Pride takes place the first or second weekend of July. The site www.portugalgay.pt lists addresses, events and other useful information.
Growth in 2023
At the end of the first half of 2023, Axel Hotels achieved revenue growth of 36% compared to the same period of the previous year. In this way, the chain plans to close this year with a turnover of 45 million euros, a figure that will represent an increase of 21% compared to the figures for 2022.

Axel Hotels is a reference among the LGBTIQ+ community
We remember the opening of its first hotel in 2003 in the city of Barcelona. Since then, the company has continued its expansion and opened an additional hotel in Barcelona, two more in Berlin and one each in Madrid, Gran Canaria, Ibiza and San Sebastian. Likewise, it expanded to America, with an opening in Miami, in 2020, and in Havana (Cuba), in 2022, adding a total of 10 establishments.
