The airport of Congonhasin the southern area of São Paulo, should have a new passenger terminal in the coming years, according to the Spanish company Aenawhich will take over operation of the site for the next 30 years on October 17.
The current terminal area of one of Latin America’s busiest airports is 35,000 square meters, but with the planned change the total space is expected to be around 80,000 square meters. The objective of the work, planned to end in June 2028is to both improve the airport space and thereception of passengersbecause complaints are frequent regarding the lack of check-in counters and lack of space for passengers. It is also planned to increase the distances between taxyways and the main runways.
The new Aena concessionaire aims to increase the flow of 22 million passengers per year until the end of the concession.
The airport of Sao Paulo/Congonhas is one of three major commercial airports serving São Paulo, Brazil (along with Sao Paulo Guarulhos And Campinas Viracopos). Congonhas, which has slot restrictions, specializes more in domestic flights and operates with a maximum of 30 operations/hour. In 2019, it was Brazil’s second airport in terms of passenger traffic, after São Paulo-Guarulhos.
