Nothing to do with the city on the Côte d’Azur, even less with the English adjective to define pleasant… Niceair, an Icelandic airline (N for North and Ice for Iceland), was launched on June 2, 2022 to connect the north of the island from Akureyri airport with the main European destinations.
The initial idea was to sign charter contracts with foreign tour operators, particularly in Denmark, the United Kingdom and Spain, in order to attract tourists to the two international airports in the north and east from Iceland.
Less than a year later, the company suspended all operations because, having only one aircraft, everything becomes problematic when it is no longer operational. Indeed, the airline’s only Airbus A319 is no longer available, since the Portuguese supplier of pilot and crewed leases would not have paid its debts, and finding a replacement aircraft is not an easy task, even if Þorvaldur Lúðvík Sigurjónsson, the boss of Niceair settled all the unpaid bills himself…
