The New Zealand government has declared a state of emergency after massive damage caused by Cyclone Gabrielle. The storm hit New Zealand on Monday with high winds of up to 140 kilometers per hour and heavy rain. Trees fell in many places and many roads and houses were damaged. More than 60,000 homes were without electricity and many towns are still cut off from the outside world. Air, sea and rail links have been partially suspended. Meteorologists also warned of further severe thunderstorms.

Auckland city is also affected

In a suburb of Auckland, the country’s largest city, firefighters were caught in a landslide. According to local media, one of them is still missing in the rubble of a collapsed house, the second was injured and rescued

The state of emergency applies to six regions where local states of emergency had already been declared: Auckland, Northland, Tairawhiti, Bay of Plenty, Waikato and Hawke’s Bay.
