New York: nighttime rat tours are the latest trend!

Tourism marketing still has a bright future ahead of it; now in the USA, even mice are cool…

The Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, Times Square: hordes of rats sprinting between an underground nest and a restaurant, squealing and squealing while a group of tourists cheer them on… New York has never lack of attractions, but this is one of the most unexpected…

This new and bizarre way of visiting New York was created by some tour guides who work in the city and who, as reported by the daily New York Postbegan launching personalized tours to introduce tourists to a very prolific local.

While the city is grappling with a major rat problem – sightings doubled last year, prompting Eric Adams, the “musophobic” mayor, to campaign – the rodent problem is, some say, New York’s latest must-have trend.

“Mice are like the new celebrities in New York, with all the press attention,” commented Luke Miller, owner of Real New York Tours, one of the creators of these special guided tours. It’s no coincidence that a few years ago a video went viral in which a mouse dragged a slice of pizza down a New York subway staircase. The footage has been viewed more than 12 million times and the rodent has been nicknamed “Pizza Rat”.

According to data from the New York Department of Health, there were more than 60,000 reports of rat sightings in the city in 2022, 102% more than in 2021.
