The National Hurricane Center has increased the chances that a tropical wave in the Atlantic will become the next depression or tropical storm in an already busy season. Friday saw the end of Tropical Storm Philippe, which became extratropical as it headed toward the Bahamas, and the system is still expected to bring strong winds and rain to New England and Atlantic Canada this weekend.
Tropical depression expected to form
The NHC gives it a 20% chance of developing in the next two days and a 70% chance in the next seven days.
If it reaches named storm strength, it could become Tropical Storm Sean.
The 2023 Atlantic hurricane season already has 18 official systems, including 17 named and one unnamed subtropical storm in January.
Six of them became hurricanes and four of them were major hurricanes, including Hurricane Idalia which hit Florida.
