At least 129 people were killed in an earthquake that struck a remote region of northwest Nepal last night, toppling several buildings. Authorities warn that the number of victims could rise.
The earthquake had a magnitude of 5.6 and occurred 42 km from Jumla in Karnali province. The quake occurred at a depth of 18 kilometers and was felt in New Delhi, the Indian capital, located almost 500 kilometers from the epicenter.
Earthquakes are common in Nepal, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet to create the imposing Himalayan mountain range. At least 9,000 people died in 2015 after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake damaged homes and temples in large parts of the country.
