This expedition is used to prepare future missions to bring back samples from Mars.
International space agencies are studying the oldest fossils for the future Mars mission.
Members of NASA’s Mars Exploration Programme, the European Space Agency, the Australian Space Agency and the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization are in Western Australia to study ‘stromatolites’ , the oldest confirmed fossilized organisms on Earth. They discuss the importance of geological context in choosing sampling sites and ensuring the integrity of a sample’s biological origin in plans for future missions to return samples from Mars to Earth.
