Powerful Category 5 Hurricane Otis, the maximum on the Saffir-Simpson scale, made landfall this Wednesday morning near the seaside resort of Acapulco in the Mexican Pacific, the United States National Hurricane Center reported. United (NHC).
This phenomenon formed in less than 12 hours from a tropical storm to a cyclone with sustained winds of 270 km/h and considered potentially catastrophic. Otis reached the coast around 12:25 a.m. local time, traveling at a speed of 17 km/h, the NHC report details.
Recent official forecasts indicated that the cyclone would “rapidly lose strength” as it crosses the southern state of Guerrero, characterized by mountainous geography, and could dissipate overnight on Wednesday.
