The Asteroid Foundation in Luxembourg celebrates the eighth edition of Asteroid Day, offering a program of festivities at the end of the week focused on education around asteroids and space, but also the development of space businesses and their interest on Earth.

From California to Luxembourg

I’Asteroid Day (Asteroid Day) was co-founded in 2014 by British astrophysicist Brian May (world famous for being the guitarist of the rock band Queen), the former American astronaut Rusty Schweickart (pilot of the lunar module during the Apollo 9 mission, in March 1969), the German documentary filmmaker Grig Richters, and the president of the B612 Foundation Danica Remy – a foundation created in 2002 in California (notably by Rusty Schweickart), and dedicated to protecting the Earth against the strikes ofasteroids.

The aim of Asteroid Day is to raise awareness of the importance of asteroids – their role in the formation of the Solar systemtheir impact on space resources, and the importance of defending our planet against possible collisions.

The event is scheduled annually on June 30, which is the anniversary of the largest asteroid impact in human history, which occurred in 1908 at Tunguskain Siberia, and which devastated in the twinkling of an eye the forest zone of this cold desert.

At LuxemburgAsteroid Day benefits from the support of the Luxembourg Space Agency (LSA).

Its program is developed by theAsteroid Foundationestablished since 2017 in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and chaired by Markus Pay.

Three days of festivities

The program for the 2023 edition of Asteroid Day is based on three pillars:

– visits by astronauts and experts to schools, on June 29 and 30

– a large space conference (Asteroid Day Space Lecture), June 30 at 4 p.m. at the cultural center Tramsschapp of Luxembourg, bringing together researchers and astronauts Christer Fuglesblood (Sweden), Dorin Prunariu (Romania) and Paolo Nespoli (Italy), followed by a Space Happy Hour.

– the Asteroid Day Festival, on July 1 at the Tramsschapp cultural center in Luxembourg, in the company of engineers, scientists, the same astronauts and entrepreneurs, who will participate in round tables on a wide range of subjects from 10 a.m. to 18 hours.
