Indonesia: the excesses of mass tourism recounted by journalist Hugo Clément

Located just off the coast of Lombok, you will find one of the most beautiful islands in Southeast Asia, Gili Trawangan Island – the largest of the three Gilis. Brimming with natural beauty and plenty to keep you occupied, it’s not hard to see why Gili Trawangan is one of Indonesia’s most famous natural landmarks and such a popular side trip from Bali or Lombok.

Even though it only measures 15 km², Gili Trawangan has many attractions! For starters, it’s home to powdery white sand beaches lined with swaying palm trees, turquoise waters teeming with diverse marine life, and epic beach bars. Add to that a range of fun activities to do like snorkeling with turtles, island hopping, scuba diving with reef sharks, and you couldn’t find a more idyllic paradise setting , even if you tried!

This is the journalist’s story about Gili Trawangan… the reality is sadder!

“It’s the hidden side of mass tourism, which we don’t see on Insta or on TikTok” (Hugo Clément)

Here is what I discovered near Bali during filming for my show “Sur le front” (France 5)… #bali #luxuryhotel #indonesia
