Flight 3923 had taken off on Sunday afternoon from José Martí International Airport in Havana for Fort Lauderdale International Airport and, having gained altitude, an engine was struck by birds, according to what indicated the airline in a statement.
Local television broadcast cellphone footage that showed smoke filling the cabin, as panicked parents instructed their children on how to put on oxygen masks.
