Greece will offer free stays in Rhodes in 2024 to tourists who fled the fires that ravaged much of the island in July.

The Greek government will offer a week’s free vacation in Rhodes next spring or autumn to those who had to cut their vacations short due to the firessaid Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis yesterday in an interview with the British channel. ITVemphasizing that “Rhodes is now more welcoming than ever, it has returned to normal“. However, he did not specify the terms and conditions for benefiting from these offered holidays.

In Rhodes, forest fires, fanned by strong winds and dry, hot weather, forced the evacuation of 20,000 people, especially foreign tourists, especially during the night of July 23rd.

Tourism is a key sector for Greece’s economy as it recovers from the 2018 debt crisis, and the island of Rhodes is one of the country’s most popular destinations. Fearing repercussions on this driving sector of the country’s economy, Greek tour operators recently launched a social media campaign entitled “Rhodes is safe» («Rhodes is a safe destination», note) to encourage tourists to visit the island.
