Work on the Frankfurt rail network has caused a breakdown in Lufthansa’s IT systems, leading the company to cancel and delay hundreds of departures in the past few hours, leaving thousands of passengers grounded in the country and around the world.
To limit the inconvenience, the German air transport security agency closed the runways at Frankfurt airport, diverting planes serving Nuremberg, Cologne and Düsseldorf. In addition, travelers on domestic flights have been reprotected on rail connections.
The inconvenience for customers traveling on domestic routes could continue into Sunday.
