THE Minister Delegate for Transport Clément Beaune confirmed yesterday the project of the government of Elisabeth Borne to tax more motorway concession companies and Airlines companies in the budget 2024.
The objective is to partially finance the ecological transition and therefore the recovery plan for the French rail network estimated at 100 billion euros. “The Council of State has told us that it is possible to request an additional contribution from motorway companies, in compliance with the contracts“said the minister yesterday on France Inter. “They can contribute to the national effort we are making for ecological transition and purchasing power“, he added, specifying that the measure would be integrated into the 2024 budget presented in the fall.
Clément Beaune also announced “additional taxation of airline tickets“. “Not for fun“, added the minister but because “the choice between the train and the plane is biased. The aircraft has historical advantages” such as the exemption from taxes on kerosene.
Also, the prices of plane tickets are sometimes more attractive than those of the train: “So we rebalance on the one hand and on the other hand, if we want to finance all these investments, 100 billion euros (…) in the rail sector in France: more trains, a renovated network, we need these investments, Well everyone has to contribute, motorway companies for example and including air transport“, summed up the minister.
