This year, the festival runs from September 29 to October 6, straddling the Mid-Autumn Festival and the National Day. Outbound travel from China has been increasing since the country allowed international travel to resume. But the majority of Chinese people in China still prefer to spend their vacations in the country. Golden Week usually attracts hundreds of millions of people to travel to China. Even with pandemic restrictions, for example, the country recorded 637 million domestic travelers in 2020.

Stays especially in China

Although more than six months have passed since China fully reopened its borders, experts have not seen the widely expected surge in travel outside the country. Online agency Trip.com said travel bookings in China increased fourfold compared to last year’s Golden Week, with residents choosing to travel between different provinces for longer periods. Autumn travel in northwest China and the comfortable climate of southern China have made these destinations particularly popular.

Foreign travel growing slowly

According to Trip.com Group data, overseas travel orders increased by almost 20 times compared to the same period in 2022. Popular destinations include Thailand, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore…

This Golden Week marks the first long holiday since the resumption of international travel, leading to a significant increase in outbound travel growth. The demand for “tailor-made” and unique trips has also increased. Countries like Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Sri Lanka and Kenya are seeing significant increases in group travel orders compared to pre-pandemic levels.
