Emergency landing of an Airbus A320 in a field in Siberia

A hydraulic failure caused the emergency landing of an Ural Airlines A320, which was originally supposed to connect Sochi, on the Black Sea, to Omsk in Siberia. The jet landed in a field near the village of Kamenka, in the Novosibirsk region, Siberia, without any passengers or crew members being injured.

A hydraulic failure caused the emergency landing

It was a hydraulic failure which forced a Russian Airbus A320 of the airline Ural Airlines, registered RA-73805, which connected the seaside resort of Sochi, on the Black Sea, to the Siberian city of Omsk with 167 people on board to make an emergency landing in a field in Siberia on Tuesday September 12, 2023, commented the airline’s CEO, Sergey Skuratov, during a press conference.

“A failure of the hydraulic system (of the plane) occurred on approach to Omsk,” he said, specifying that the plane is equipped with three hydraulic systems (green, the one that failed , yellow and blue) operating continuously. According to Skuratov, the captain, fearing a fuel shortage, first decided to land the jet at an emergency airfield outside Novosibirsk. “The captain realized that there might not be enough fuel to land the A320 at the Novosibirsk diversion airfield. He therefore decided to land the aircraft in a field, landing gear down, which he did successfully,” Mr. Skuratov said. The landing was made near the village of Kamenka, Novosibirsk region, Siberia. 159 passengers and six crew members are on board.

A precedent with a bird collision

This landing is reminiscent of that of flight 178, which on August 15, 2019 saw an A321 of the same company connecting Moscow-Zhukovsky to Simferopol, in Crimea, make an emergency landing, gear retracted, in a corn field located a few kilometers from the runway of Zhukovsky airport. The jet had been the victim of a bird collision with a flock of seagulls during takeoff – like the A320 of the now famous US Airways Flight 1549, which was at the controls of Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, but which was the victim of a bird collision with geese-, which caused serious engine malfunctions. The landing, made in the middle of a crop field by the captain, Damir Ioussoupov and his co-pilot Georgui Mourzine, left seventy minor injuries, including nine children, among the 226 passengers.
