Lovers of history, culture and architecture are invited to celebrate Heritage Days at the prestigious Mazan Castle (Vaucluse), located in the heart of a picturesque landscape. This long-awaited annual event will be held on September 16 and 17, offering visitors the opportunity to delve into the fascinating past of this iconic residence. The Marquis de Sade lived in this house!
Mazan Castle housed the Marquis de Sade
Nestled at the foot of Ventoux, the Château de Mazan is a true historical gem. Owned by the de Sade family since August 1634, the castle embodies the elegance and charm of a bygone era. The castle was mainly occupied by the father of the Marquis de Sade who died there in 1767, the date on which the Marquis took possession of the premises and paid all his attention to it. From that year onwards, he undertook numerous modernization works in order to be able to stay there with dignity.
Now classified 4 stars, the Château de Mazan was bought in 2019 by the French and independent hotel group, Elegant Properties Collection. Under the leadership of Franck Jaulneau, Director and Partner of the group, and Claire Annicchiarico, Architect, renovations are being undertaken to restore the Château to all its beauty.

For Heritage Days, the doors of the castle open to welcome the curious and history lovers, on several slots and by reservation only.
All visits are guided and commented by Mr. Franck Jaulneau, Founder and Managing Director of the Elegant Properties Collection hotel group and true enthusiast of the history of a place dear to his heart.

The Marquis de Sade known for his works dedicated to pornography…
Donatien Alphonse François de Sade, commonly called the Marquis de Sade, born June 2, 1740 in Paris and died December 2, 1814 in Charenton-Saint-Maurice, today Saint-Maurice in Val-de-Marne, is a man of letters, novelist, philosopher, long condemned to anathema because of the part given in his work to eroticism and pornography, associated with acts of violence and cruelty (torture, incest, rape, pedophilia, murders , etc.). The expression of virulent anticlerical atheism is one of the most recurring themes in his writings. He is the author of numerous works of various genres which have made him one of the greatest scholars of world literature.
