Tourism Australia’s ‘One Week Walkabout’ program is offering one-week vacations to Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane starting at $1,299 for bookings by November 30 and travel during the period May 5-June 8, 2010 (which is Australia’s autumn low season).

One Week Walkabout vacations offered by Travelscene and Qantas Airways include round-trip air direct from Los Angeles International Airport or San Francisco International Airport, accommodation for five nights and select touring experiences.

Travelers can first pick Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane and from there, choose between different touring options for the selected city.

For example, in Sydney, visitors can either explore the city (and get entry to Sydney Wildlife World or Sydney Aquarium) or stay three days in Sydney and spend the other two with a car rental and hotel in the Hunter Valley or Blue Mountains.

Melbourne’s Great Ocean Road option (three nights’ hotel in the city, two nights’ hotel on the Great Ocean Road, and three days’ car rental) is strongly recommended for those who love driving tours. Another package highlights Melbourne’s nearby Yarra Valley wine country, offering four nights’ hotel in the city, one night in the wine country and a two-day car rental.

For an outdoors vacation, Tourism Australia recommends visitors take in Brisbane and Australia Zoo in either of their choices and explore some of Australia’s best beaches with car rental and two nights’ hotel at either the Sunshine or Gold Coast.

Flying to Australia from the west coast takes 14 hours, a slightly longer trip than flying to most European destinations from California. Qantas operates Airbus A380 super-jumbos on the routes.
