Corsica: trains to the rescue of planes

The airline company Air Corsica signed an agreement with the Railways of Corsica (CFC) in order to have an additional option for redirect passengers in the event of a “heavy” disruption to air traffic.

The CFC – Air Corsica partnership was recorded on June 29, 2023 at the Collectivity of Corsica, the Corsican company explaining that as an air carrier, it “may occasionally suffer disruptions leading to changes in its flight schedule, which then require transfers of its passengers to another airport in Corsica”. To date, the only mode of surface transport used by Air Corsica in these situations is by road (coaches, taxis, rental vehicles).

From now on, Air Corsica will therefore have a “complementary transport solution, by offering its travelers a transfer via existing rail traffic”. With three railway stations/stops located near island airports (Ajaccio, Bastia, Calvi And Figari), the rail transport service is therefore an “interesting alternative for occasionally rerouting” Air Corsica passengers.

During “serious irregularities”, for example in the case of an airport temporarily closed to air traffic for bad weather conditions, the Chemins de Fer de la Corse in consultation with Air Corsica may set up special trains “in order to best respond to these exceptional situations”. This partnership is a concrete action “in line with the Corsican Collectivity’s desire to meet the needs of mobility of the population and users through connected modes of transport and complementary “, concludes the press release of the latter.
