Of the hundreds of flights were canceled in the Guangdong province of China and to Hong Kong while the the typhoon Saola was approaching Chinese territory this Friday, forcing local authorities to issue a storm alert.
Hong Kong airline Cathay Pacific has suspended all flights departing and arriving in Hong Kong for today. In Guangdong province, international airports in the metropolises of Zhuhai and Shenzhen canceled hundreds of flights while local authorities suspended all rail connections until Saturday.
Typhoon Saola with winds reaching more than 200 km/h is expected to hit Guangdong province as well as the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao on Friday evening or Saturday morning, according to the China Meteorological Center. In Hong Kong, the typhoon is classified force 8, force 10 being the highest level.
In addition to air traffic and rail traffic, local authorities have closed schools, businesses and several roads in Guangdong province, as well as in the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao.
