All operations were halted at the airport in Catania-Fontanarossathe most important in Sicily, until tomorrow included at the earliest following a fire in the terminal.
The fire broke out on the night of July 16 to 17, 2023 in the Catania airport, without hurting among those present; some poisonings have been reported. The intervention of firefighters quickly put an end to the disaster, which had spread in Terminal C then filled with smoke.
The manager of Fontanarossa BAG then announced the complete closure of the airport until midday Monday, before extending it until Wednesday July 19 at 2:00 p.m. in view of the extent of the damage. Thirty flights of Wizz Air, ITA AirwaysAir Cairo, Aeroitalia, Vueling or (especially) Ryanair among others were baffled to airports in the region, in particular Palermo and Comiso, with the establishment of shuttles to Catania. All other flights were canceled since Monday.
Passengers on flights to and from Catania are advised to contact their airline to check the status of their flight.
