According to the American professional site TravelPulsethe American Airlines flight from Miami to New York had to be diverted to Jacksonville airport due to the seemingly accidental release of pepper spray that a passenger was carrying in her cabin baggage.
An incident that caused passengers to fear they could not breathe, having burned their skin and eyes, one said. Likewise, the airline called the event disturbing, which is why the flight was diverted.
However, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) allows pepper spray in checked baggage, the canister of which is equipped with a safety mechanism that prevents accidental release.
