US Airways is launching service in June and July from Washington Reagan National Airport to six destinations.

The airline is beginning service to San Diego, Augusta in Georgia, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Fayetteville in Arkansas, and the Canadian cities of Montreal and Toronto from the U.S. capital’s downtown airport.

US Airways’ new service to San Diego will begin on June 8, while service to all other communities will begin on July 11. Currently, no carrier at Reagan National offers non-stop service to San Diego, Augusta or Fayetteville.

US Airways has painted a number of aircraft in special-theme liveries, including several painted to honor professional sports teams. The carrier painted this Airbus A319 to honor the Arizona Cardinals, a professional American football team in the Western Division of the National Football Conference of the National Football League

“US Airways will have a total of 22 new routes from Washington D.C.’s Reagan National beginning this spring and summer,” says Andrew Nocella, US Airways’ senior vice president, marketing and planning. “Our growing presence at Reagan National Airport highlights our commitment to connect small, medium and large communities to the nation’s capital.”

The new flights are the final phase in US Airways’ plan to focus on its core service areas of Washington, D.C.; Philadelphia; Phoenix; and Charlotte, North Carolina.

In January, US Airways announced expanded service from Washington, D.C. to 14 destinations from Reagan National Airport. These flights will begin on March 25.

The airline also announced nonstop flights between Washington Reagan National Airport and Cincinnati and Des Moines, starting on May 2.

Once the new flights begin, 99 per cent of the airline’s available seat mile (ASM) capacity will operate to or from its core service areas. The figure includes the US Airways Shuttle, which operates hourly between Washington Reagan, Boston and New York LaGuardia Airport.

According to US Airways, this represents a 16 percentage point change from 2006, when, following the merger of US Airways and America West Airlines, only 83 per cent of the airline’s ASMs touched its core focus areas and US Airways Shuttle.
