Low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines has announced a new round of expansion which will see it adding five new cities and 10 new routes, with the first of the new routes and cities joining the network in January.

The airline is adding five new routes from its Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) base and five new routes from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

From Fort Lauderdale, Spirit Airlines will add Plattsburgh, New York (which the airline says serves Montreal in Canada) with four weekly non-stops starting January 14, 2011. The carrier is also launching service from FLL to Niagara Falls International Airport, New York (IAG) – which Spirit says serves Buffalo, New York and Toronto – with three weekly non-stops beginning January 27. In addition to Niagara Falls being a tourist destination in itself, Niagara Falls International Airport is also located near Buffalo and is just across the border from the city of Niagara Falls in Canada, about 40 miles from Toronto.

Spirit Airlines, which bills itself as America's largest ultra-low-cost carrier, operates an all-Airbus A320-family fleet which in September 2010 included 26 A319s, four A320s and two A321-200s. As of September 2010 the carrier also had another 36 A320-family aircraft on order

On May 5, Spirit will start operating twice-daily non-stops to Dallas/Fort Worth from Fort Lauderdale.

In addition to the new non-stop services, the airline says its new schedule provides two daily one-stop, same-aircraft options for customers traveling between Fort Lauderdale and Las Vegas.

On May 5, Spirit Airlines will begin five new routes from Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR). It will operate a daily round-trip to Washington Reagan National Airport; four weekly non-stops to Plattsburgh; three weekly round-trips to Niagara Falls, New York; four weekly non-stops to Latrobe; and three weekly round-trips to Charleston, West Virginia.
