Spirit Airlines Announces Six More Destinations from DFW

Spirit Airlines is continuing its expansion at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) by adding non-stop service in the first half of 2013 to another six destinations, among them five cities in the United States and the other in Mexico.

The new U.S. destinations include Fort Myers, Minneapolis-St. Paul, New Orleans, Philadelphia and Latrobe (near Pittsburgh) in Pennsylvania.

Spirit Airlines, which bills itself as America's largest ultra-low-cost carrier, operates an all-Airbus A320-family fleet which in September 2010 included 26 A319s, four A320s and two A321-200s. As of September 2010 the carrier also had another 36 A320-family aircraft on order

Spirit Airlines has also filed an application with the U.S. Department of Transportation to fly from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport to Los Cabos International Airport, which serves the beach-resort destinations of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo on the Baja California peninsula in Mexico.

Assuming Spirit’s application to serve Los Cabos is successful, it will bring the total number of non-stop destinations that Spirit serves from DFW to 26.

Spirit will offer non-stop seasonal service between DFW and Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) near Fort Myers with three weekly flights from November 8, 2012 through April 24, 2013.

The airline’s schedule on the DFW-Fort Myers route will see flight NK448 leave DFW at 11:15 a.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays and arrive at RSW at 2:45 p.m. local time. In the other direction, flight NK431 will depart RSW at 2:25 p.m. and reach DFW at 4:15 p.m. local time.

Daily Spirit Airlines non-stop service between DFW and Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) begins on January 24, 2013, with a second daily flight starting on June 13, 2013.

The carrier’s initial schedule on the route will see its daily flight NK364 push back from the gate at DFW at 11:20 a,m, and land at MSY at 12:45 p.m. In the other direction, Spirit’s flight NK365 is timed to begin taxiing at MSY at 1:35 p.m. and to touch down at DFW at 3:05 p.m.

Spirit Airlines will offer four weekly non-stop flights between DFW and Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) from April 26, 2013, with the service increasing to daily frequency on June 13, 2013.

Miramar, Florida-headquartered Spirit’s initial schedule on the route calls for flight NK742 to depart DFW at 4:30 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays and to reach MSP at 6:50 p.m. In the other direction, flight NK747 is timed to push back from the gate at MSP at 7:40 p.m. in order to make a 10:15 p.m. arrival at DFW.

Spirit Airlines operates an all-Airbus A320 family fleet which includes 26 A319s and (including existing orders) up to 70 A320s. Spirit Airlines also has 45 A320neo-family jets on order. Two leased A321s are expected to leave the fleet

The carrier will also offer four weekly non-stop flights between DFW and Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) beginning on April 26, 2013, with service increasing to daily on June 13, 2013.

From April 26, Spirit’s flight NK484 will leave DFW at 7:40 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays and reach PHL at 11:55 a.m. local time. In the other direction, flight NK215 is scheduled to depart PHL at 12:45 p.m. and to touch down at DFW at 3:10 p.m. local time.

Spirit will operate three weekly non-stop flights between DFW and Latrobe’s Arnold Palmer Regional Airport (LBE) near Pittsburgh beginning on June 14, 2013.

From June 14, Spirit’s flight NK186 will begin taxiing at DFW at 2:45 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and get to LBE at 6:25 p.m. local time. In the other direction, flight NK181 will leave LBE at 7:15 p.m. and arrive at DFW at 9:05 p.m. local time.

The Airbus A319 has provided the backbone of the Spirit Airlines fleet and the carrier will continue to operate a sizable number of A319s, though it is increasingly graduating to the larger A320 on many routes

The airline says it will announce its schedule and fares for the DFW-Los Cabos International Airport route upon receipt of the necessary governmental approval.

Spirit began serving DFW in May 2011 and has continued to grow its operations there ever since. Today Spirit offers non-stop service to 15 destinations from DFW: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Myrtle Beach, New York LaGuardia, Orlando, Williams Gateway Airport in Mesa in Arizona, San Diego, Tampa, Toluca near Mexico City, and Portland in Oregon.

Earlier this month Spirit announced it would add non-stop service from DFW to Baltimore/Washington International, Houston Bush Intercontinental Airport, Oakland, and Los Angeles. The airline has also applied to serve Cancun from DFW.
