Singapore Airlines and Garuda Indonesia have agreed to codeshare on flights between Singapore and Denpasar in Bali from December 1.

Under the agreement, the two airlines will codeshare on a reciprocal basis on all their flights between Singapore and Denpasar. Singapore Airlines operates three flights per day on the route while Garuda operates one daily round-trip.

The codeshare is particularly interesting because Garuda Indonesia is set to begin the process of joining the SkyTeam alliance, while Singapore Airlines is a long-established member of the rival Star Alliance.

“We are naturally delighted to have signed a codeshare agreement with Garuda Indonesia. It stems from our mutual desire to offer more choice of flights for our customers, enhance the popular island destination of Bali’s accessibility to the world and maximise the advantages of our route networks for the benefit of customers of both airlines,” says Ng Kian Wah, Singapore Airlines’ senior vice president, sales regions.

In 2008 Garuda Indonesia ordered 10 Boeing 777-300ERs and 25 more Boeing 737-800s to add to its fast-growing fleet, and secured purchase rights for another 10 777-300ERs and 25 more 737-800s. If Garuda exercises all its purchase rights for 737-800s it may end up operating almost 90 of the type. The 777-300ER is set to become the main type for Garuda's longest-haul routes, but the carrier also has 24 Airbus A330-200s and A330-300s in service and on order for long-haul work, as well as three 747-400s

“Garuda’s customers will be able to enjoy convenient connections from Singapore to other cities, while SIA’s customers may benefit from Garuda’s links to many other domestic points in Indonesia from Denpasar,” adds Ng.

Singapore Airlines will list Garuda’s flight GA841 between Singapore Changi International Airport (SIN) and Denpasar’s Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS) in its own reservations system as SQ5551. In the other direction, SIA will list Garuda’s flight GA840 between DPS and SIN as flight SQ5550.

Meanwhile, Garuda will list SIA’s flight SQ942 between SIN and DPS as GA9071; SQ941 as GA9070; and SQ946 as GA9073.

In the other direction, between Denpasar and Singapore, Garuda will list Singapore Airlines’ flight SQ943 as GA9072; SQ948 as GA9075; and SQ947 as GA9074.
