Southwest and AirTran Add New Routes and Flights in Winter Schedule

Southwest Airlines and its subsidiary AirTran Airways have announced new routes as they extend their flight schedules for travel bookings through January 4, 2013.

Dallas-based Southwest Airlines also announced that it will begin service to Florida’s Key West International Airport (EYW) on November 4, assuming all flying there from AirTran Airways.

Southwest Airlines will operate one daily non-stop departure to Tampa International Airport (TPA)  from EYW and one daily non-stop departure to Orlando International Airport (MCO).

In addition, Southwest will add new service between several markets. These include:

● Two daily non-stop flights between Dallas Love Field and Harlingen, Texas;

● One daily non-stop flight between Denver International Airport and Louisville, Kentucky;

● Two daily non-stop flights between Houston Hobby and Indianapolis;

● One daily non-stop flight between Houston Hobby and John Wayne Orange County Airport; and

● One daily non-stop flight between Kansas City and New Orleans.

In addition to taking over AirTran’s services from Key West, Southwest will assume other AirTran flights. These include:

● Two daily non-stop flights between Boston Logan and Milwaukee;

● One daily non-stop flight between Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport and Milwaukee;

● Five daily nonstop flights between Minneapolis-St. Paul and Milwaukee;

● One daily non-stop flight between San Francisco and Milwaukee; and

● One daily non-stop flight between Orlando and Minneapolis-St. Paul.

AirTran Airways built up a sizable U.S. domestic network and also an extensive international network to destinations in the Caribbean and Mexico. Southwest Airlines, which had no international network when it bought AirTran, plans to take advantage of AirTran's endeavors by eventually taking over and expanding upon the international network

AirTran Airways has also made adjustments to its flight schedule to accommodate seasonal demand to several destinations. AirTran’s seasonal new markets include:

● One daily non-stop flight between Buffalo and Tampa;

● One daily non-stop flight between Akron-Canton and Fort Myers;

● One daily non-stop flight between Columbus and Fort Lauderdale Hollywood;

● One daily non-stop flight between Columbus and Tampa;

● One daily non-stop flight between Fort Lauderdale Hollywood and Indianapolis;

● One daily non-stop flight between Fort Lauderdale Hollywood and Philadelphia International Airport;

● One daily non-stop flight between Pittsburgh and Tampa;

● One daily non-stop flight between Rochester, New York and Tampa;

● Four weekly non-stop flights between Flint, Michigan and Fort Myers; and

● Four weekly non-stop flights between Grand Rapids, Michigan and Fort Myers.
