Icelandair is having Row 44 Inc., which provides inflight Wi-Fi and device-based entertainment content for airlines, equip its fleet with high-speed in-flight Wi-Fi, starting this year.
Upon roll-out of the service on its aircraft, Icelandair will be the first North Atlantic airline to operate in-flight Wi-Fi fleet-wide, according to Row 44.
Icelandair's main passenger-aircraft type is the Boeing 757-200. The carrier has 15 in service, along with one 757-300 and five 757-200F freighters
There was a 16 per cent increase in foreign visitors to Iceland last year from the year prior, according to the Icelandic Tourist Board. Iceland, a nation of about 320,000 people on a large island between Norway and Greenland, is known for its hot springs, geysers, waterfalls and volcanoes.
“Icelandair has built a system of outstanding flight services between Iceland and other countries, and Row 44 now allows us to continue to build on that system, and our present in-flight entertainment system, by equipping our flights with an outstanding passenger experience inside the cabin,” says Birkir Holm Guonason, Icelandair’s CEO.
“Row 44 was the only provider to offer the breadth and depth of services we favored that will allow our customers to get connected and be entertained, and to do so in a way that we believe they desire – straight to their own devices,” adds Guonason.
Row 44 says its in-flight Wi-Fi service is the only device-based service that operates over land and water, making it desirable for Icelandair, which has numerous transatlantic routes.
Among the list of services to which Icelandair customers have access on their own Wi-Fi-enabled devices are high-speed Internet connectivity; shopping for in-flight specials; and researching and booking local services at their destinations.
Icelandair expects to begin installation of Row 44′s in-flight Wi-FI service in its aircraft in the fourth quarter of 2012.
The national carrier of Iceland since 1937, Icelandair offers non-stop, year-round service to Iceland from Boston, New York JFK, Seattle and Denver; and seasonal service from Washington Dulles, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Orlando Sanford, Halifax and Toronto.
Connections at Icelandair’s hub at Keflavik International Airport are available to more than 20 destinations in Scandinavia, the U.K. and Continental Europe. Icelandair offers three cabins of service: Economy, Economy Comfort and Saga.
All cabins on Icelandair’s jets feature leather seats and in-flight entertainment centers, while Economy Comfort and Saga class offer two-by-two seating, premium meal service, Business Class check-in and lounge access, where available.

The airline operates a fleet of 15 Boeing 757-200 jets and one Boeing 757-300 on passenger services, while Icelandair Cargo has five converted Boeing 757-200 Freighters. Icelandair also has 10 Boeing 737-800s on order.
