Air Europa-Iberia merger: the EU is preparing to do battle

As can be read on the FinancialTimes, the acquisition of Air Europa by IAG via Iberia will not be a walk in the park. On the contrary, as already happened in the first attempt before Covid, the European Commission is preparing to fight again.

In Brussels, there would be a good dose of annoyance for the new attempt after the first no and the opposition could this time be even stronger.

The merger remains unpopular with the European Union for the same reason as the previous time: the entry of Air Europa into the group which already controls Iberia and Vueling in Spain would lead to an excessive concentration on the Iberian market equal, according to some estimates, at 33 percent of the market compared to 25 currently.
