THE tourism in Africa is regaining momentum after the unprecedented crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the latest data from theWorld Tourism Organization (UNWTO) of the United Nations.
International arrivals across the African continent had returned to 88% of pre-pandemic levels by the end of the first quarter of this year. At the sub-regional level, North Africa is performing particularly well. Arrivals here were actually 4% higher than pre-pandemic 2019 levels over the same period. Of the African destinations for which data is available, Morocco and the Republic of Mauritius notably exceeded their 2019 tourism receipts in the first quarter of 2023.
At the 66th Meeting of the UNWTO Regional Commission for Africa held on Thursday in Mauritius, UNWTO presented a new set of “ Investment Guidelines for the Republic of Mauritius, designed to connect investors with tourism projects in the country. The Guidelines follow similar publications focused on Tanzania, with editions for Malawi, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda and Zambia in development.
” The UNWTO Program of Action for Africa has been adapted. Our vision for African tourism is also one of strong governance, increased education and more and better jobs. To achieve this, we aim to promote innovation, champion Brand Africa, facilitate travel and unlock growth through investments and public-private partnerships. said UNWTO Secretary General Zurab Pololikashvili.
