The carrier’s existing shareholders and Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways, Alitalia’s new 49 per cent shareholder, announced on January 20 that the Italian carrier would adopt new network, fleet, cost-management, airline partnership and customer-service strategies. It is also adopting a new look.

Air Berlin will officially become a full member of the oneworld alliance on Tuesday, March 20, adding Europe’s sixth-largest carrier to the alliance. Austrian airline Niki, also a member of the Air Berlin group, will join oneworld at the same time as an affiliate member.

According to reports from Europe, Etihad Airways is paying only €72.9 million ($94.9 million) to buy 27.03 per cent of Air Berlin, Europe ’s sixth-largest airline, in addition to the 2.99 per cent pre-dilution shareholding it already owned in the carrier.
