New U.S. Nationwide Photographic Exhibition Explores Braceros’ Story

The Bracero History Project Web site, developed in partnership with the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University, the University of Texas in El Paso and Brown University, provides transcripts and audio files of all the oral histories, images, essays, bibliographies and teaching materials associated with the project. The National Museum of American History began the Bracero History Project in 2005 with a coalition of museums, universities and cultural institutions to document the bracero experience. “Bittersweet Harvest” will remain on display at the museum through January 3, 2010.


The Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service will then take two versions of the exhibition across the United States for more than two years for display in a sizable number of locations. By 2011, more than 17 communities will have shown the exhibition.

At present, the traveling exhibit schedule calls for “Bittersweet Harvest” to be on display at Mexican Heritage Plaza, San Jose, California from February 20, 2010 until May 2, 2010.

From May 22, 2010 until August 1, 2010, the exhibition will be displayed at the Alameda National Center for Latin Arts and Culture in San Antonio, Texas. During the same May 22, 2010-August 1, 2010 period, the second version of the exhibition is reserved for show at Branigan Cultural Center, Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Then, from August 21, 2010 to October 31, 2010, the two versions of “Bittersweet Harvest” will be on show at El Museo Latino in Omaha, Nebraska and the Center for Community Engagement, California State University, Channel Islands, Camarillo, California.

Next, the two exhibitions will move to the Chamizal National Memorial in El Paso, Texas and to Sonoma County Museum, Santa Rosa, California for display from November 20, 2010 to January 30, 2011.

The two versions of “Bittersweet Harvest” will then be shown from February 19, 2011 to May 1, 2011 at the Chandler-Gilbert Community College Library, Chandler, Arizona; and the Wittliff Gallery, Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas.

The period from May 21, 2011 to July 31, 201l is still open for a display location to be confirmed, but the second version is planned for display at the Missouri History Museum, St. Louis, Missouri during that period.

From August 20, 2011 to October 30, 2011, one version of the exhibition will be shown at the Art Museum of Eastern Idaho in Idaho Falls, Idaho; and the second is planned for display at the Museum of History and Art, Ontario, California.

Refurbishment of both versions of the exhibition will take place from November 19, 2011 to January 29, 2012. At present all booking dates for the second version of “Bittersweet Harvest” after January 29, 2012 are still open.

The first version will be put on display from February 18, 2012 to April 29, 2012 at the Oregon Historical Society, Portland, Oregon.

This version will then go to Springs Preserve, Las Vegas, Nevada for display from May 19, 2012 to July 29, 2012. At present the display period directly following this, August 18, 2012 to October 28, 2012, is still open for booking.

From November 17, 2012 to January 27, 2013, the first version of the exhibition goes on show at the Muskegon County Museum, Muskegon, Michigan. Following this, from February 16, 2013 to April 28, 2013, “Bittersweet Harvest” is planned for display at Roland Park County School, Baltimore, Maryland.

At present, the last confirmed date for the first version is from May 18, 2013 to July 28, 2013, at The Historical Society of Saginaw County and the Castle Museum in Saginaw, Michigan. Display periods from August 17, 2013 to October 27, 2013 and from November 16, 2013 to January 26, 2014 are still open for booking.
