Virgin America has announced its planned schedules for service to San Jose del Cabo and Cancun from California this winter.

The airline expects to begin flights from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to San Jose del Cabo’s Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) on December 16, from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Cancun International Airport (CUN) on January 19, 2011, and from SFO to CUN on January 20, 2011.

In June 2010, Virgin America announced its intent to launch flights to Mexico by seeking authority from the U.S. Department of Transportation to begin flying the routes as of this winter. DOT granted the airline authority to begin operations on the routes earlier this month. The airline has announced the start of Mexico service pending the necessary Mexican government approvals.

With the launch of the Mexico routes, Virgin America will serve three international destinations in its growing network. Its other international destination is Toronto.

“We are pleased to welcome Virgin America to Los Cabos. The decision to serve San Jose del Cabo is a testament to our destination’s strong tourism economy and commitment to provide each visitor with an unmatched vacation experience,” says Gonzalo Franyutti De La Parra, president of the Los Cabos Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Virgin America operates an all-Airbus fleet that consists of A320s (like the one seen here) and A319s. The A319 has the same wings, engines, fuselage width, tail and flightdeck as the A320, but has a slightly shorter fuselage and thus carries slightly fewer passengers

The airline’s Mexico flight schedule calls for flight VX706 to depart SFO on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 12:10 p.m. and land at SJD at 4:20 p.m. In the other direction, flight VX709 is timed to leave SJD on the same days at 5:20 p.m. and to reach SFO at 7:35 p.m.

On the SFO-CUN route, flight VX284 is scheduled to push back at SFO at 8:00 a.m. and to arrive at CUN at 3:45 p.m. on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. In the other direction, flight VX283 will depart CUN at 4:45 p.m. and get to SFO at 9:05 p.m.

For the LAX-CUN service, flight VX290 will push back at LAX at 11:55 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and will land at CUN at 7:20 p.m. Returning, flight VX295 is timed to depart CUN at 8:20 p.m. and to reach LAX at 12:01 a.m.

To mark announcement of its planned schedules for three new routes to Mexico, Virgin America has launched a three-day fare sale with one-way fares (not including taxes and government and airline fees) from $109 coast-to-coast and $129 to Mexico.

In July, Virgin America announced plans to order 40 new aircraft. Virgin America flies to San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Washington D.C., Seattle, Las Vegas, San Diego, Boston, Fort Lauderdale, Toronto, Orlando (starting October 6), Dallas-Fort Worth (starting December), Los Cabos (starting December 16) and Cancun (starting January 19, 2011).
