Second Phase of Helsinki-Vantaa Terminal Extension Opens

by Staff on September 18, 2009

The second major step in the transformation of the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport terminal extension has been completed, with the opening of a new shopping area and a large My City Helsinki restaurant world.

New stores in the extension section include Luxbag, Mulberry, Stockmann, M-Boxi, Aseman Kello and an R-kiosk newsstand.

“Finnair customers arriving at the terminal now have full access to a new shopping area and a nearly 400-seat restaurant world, which includes a video theatre for the smallest members of the family and an ice-cream bar. Excellent champagne and interesting wines are available from the bar, while new gate facilities cut transfer times,” says Markku Remes, Finnair’s customer experience management manager.

New departure gates are progressively being opened for use, as well as a seven-line security checkpoint area for arriving transfer passengers, which is expected to speed up transfers to connecting flights.

The first phase of the new 150 million-euro terminal opened in August, serving long-haul flight customers and those bound for other destinations outside the Schengen area, speeding up Finnair customers’ connection-flight formalities and improving the general Helsinki-Vantaa Airport experience for passengers of Finnair and other airlines .

The final stage of the airport expansion will be completed on December 11 with the opening of a 1,000 -square-meter Via Lounge. Services provided will include six private shower rooms, a snack buffet and a well-stocked Via wine bar, plus relaxation and working areas.

A Via Spa of nearly 600 square meters will also open. Via Spa will offer four different saunas: an Alpine-style spruce sauna, a stone sauna, a steam sauna and a traditional Finnish sauna with a view over a mineral water pool to the aircraft taxiways. Special spa treatments will be offered by expert staff based on the Haslauer spa concept.

The innovations are part of an effort by Finnair and Finavia to provide increasingly efficient and pleasant transit services to passengers on routes between Europe and Asia.
