Japan Airlines (JAL) and Qantas subsidiary Jetstar Airways have reached an agreement to expand their codeshare partnership to include flights operated by Jetstar on routes linking Tokyo’s Narita International Airport and Osaka’s Kansai International Airport with Gold Coast Airport in Queensland from November 25.
JAL and Jetstar have been bilateral partners since May 2007. Japan Airlines already markets flights operated by Jetstar that connect Tokyo Narita and Osaka Kansai with Cairns International Airport (CNS). Cairns is a tourism destination in northeast Queensland that is popular because of its proximity to the Great Barrier Reef.
The enhanced codeshare agreement will place Gold Coast, a popular tourist destination south of Brisbane, on JAL’s network map alongside Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth. These destinations feature in Japan Airlines’ network because of its codeshare with fellow oneworld-alliance member Qantas Airways on flights between the four Australian cities and Singapore.
Japan Airlines will only offer economy-class seats on Jetstar-operated codeshare flights, the fares including meals and soft drinks. Alcoholic drinks and additional refreshments will be available for purchase onboard.
Reservations and ticket sales for the new codeshare flights start on November 25.
Between Tokyo Narita (NRT) and Gold Coast Airport (OOL), Japan Airlines will list Jatestar’s flight JQ012 in its own reservations system as JL5091. In the other direction, on the OOL-NRT sector, JAL will list Jetstar’s flight JQ011 as JL5092. Jetstar operates all its long-haul flights with Airbus A330-200s.
On Jetstar’s flights from Kansai International Airport (KIX) to Gold Coast Airport, JAL will list Jetstar’s flight JQ020 as JL5087. In the other sirection, Japan Airlines will list Jetstar’s OOL-KIX flight JQ019 as JL5088.
JAL continues to operate its own daily service between Sydney and Tokyo Narita, offering its business-class JAL Shell Flat seat and premium-economy JAL Sky Shell seat on the route.
