All oneworld-alliance member airlines serving Tokyo’s Narita International Airport will be operating from the same terminal from the end of this month, once British Airways transfers its operations to be alongside those of its alliance partners in Terminal 2 with effect from October 31.

Japan Airlines (JAL), American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Finnair and Qantas are already based in Terminal 2 at Japan’s main international hub.

Oneworld says British Airways’ move alongside them should speed connections for passengers transferring between the UK airline and its oneworld partners at Narita, which is one of oneworld’s key hubs in Asia.

Together, the five airlines operate 750 arrivals and departures a week at Narita, connecting the airport non-stop with some 30 destinations worldwide. From Narita, American Airlines offers 35 departures a week to the USA: two a day to Dallas/Fort Worth and daily flights to Chicago O’Hare, Los Angeles and New York JFK. British Airways serves London Heathrow daily.

Additionally, Cathay Pacific Airways operates to Hong Kong five times a day. Finnair operates daily flights to Helsinki. Japan Airlines operates an average of 40 passenger flights a day from Tokyo Narita to some 29 destinations worldwide. Qantas operates daily flights to Sydney and three flights a week to Perth.

At Terminal 2, British Airways will offer its premium customers access to JAL’s lounges. Its First Class and Executive Club Gold tier members will be able to use JAL’s First Class Lounge, while its Club World and Executive Club Silver tier cardholders will be offered JAL’s Sakura Lounge.

In addition to operating 57 Boeing 747-400s, British Airways' long-haul fleet includes three 777-200s, 43 777-200ERs and two 777-300ERs. BA also has four more 777-300ERs on order

British Airways’ Tokyo Narita terminal switch completes one of the alliance’s biggest airport co-location projects to date. The projects began as JAL joined the alliance three years ago.

The oneworld airlines’ move to Terminal 2 at Narita is the latest step by oneworld member airlines to strengthen links with their Japanese partner following its reaffirmation to the alliance in February.

Since then, JAL and American Airlines have agreed a proposed joint business between North America and Asia, which they aim to launch early next year.   It gained a tentative green light from the authorities in the USA and final approval from the regulators in Japan earlier this month. Meanwhile, JAL has expanded code-sharing with many of its oneworld partners, including American, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair and Qantas.

On the same day that British Airways moves into Tokyo Narita Terminal 2, oneworld’s member airlines will also be marking their co-location at Tokyo Haneda, as that airport opens fully to scheduled international services.

According to oneworld, at Haneda its member airlines will offer:

  • The airport’s most extensive international network, including the only flights between Haneda and Europe, with services to both London Heathrow by British Airways and Paris Charles de Gaulle by JAL; and the only flights to New York (by American Airlines) and San Francisco (by JAL);
  • More international capacity to and from Tokyo Haneda than any other alliance;
  • The biggest domestic schedule at what is also Japan’s biggest domestic hub; and
  • A host of new facilities for passengers.

From October 31, JAL will offer international service from Haneda to Bangkok, Beijing, Honolulu, Hong Kong, Paris CDG, San Francisco, Seoul Gimpo, Shanghai Hongqiao, Singapore and Taipei Songshan.  At the same time, Cathay Pacific Airways will launch twice-daily service between the airport and its Hong Kong hub.

American Airlines will inaugurate daily New York JFK services from Haneda from January, with British Airways offering flights to London Heathrow a month later. This will increase oneworld’s international network from Haneda to 12 destinations, on most days served by 19 departures. Oneworld says this is more international destinations offered from Haneda than any other alliance.

Like its global-alliance competitors Star Alliance and SkyTeam, oneworld aims to co-locate its member airlines within the same terminals at airports wherever it makes sense and opportunities allow. The alliance has completed such  projects at scores of airports worldwide with major initiatives completed recently at London Heathrow, Barcelona, Beijing and Shanghai.
