Alaska Airlines inaugurates nonstop service on September 2 between San Jose, California and Austin, Texas, resurrecting the once-popular “nerd bird” route.

The flight originates in Portland, Oregon, offering same-plane service through to Austin, and the airline will add another daily flight linking the three cities starting March 14, 2010.

“This route is a natural extension of our network and provides a vital link between these high-tech hubs,” says Steve Jarvis, Alaska Airlines’ vice president of marketing, sales and customer experience.

Alaska inaugurates the new route with its “Wi-Fi One” aircraft, a specially-equipped Boeing 737-700 offering inflight broadband Internet access. Customers can connect to Alaska Airlines Inflight Wi-Fi using any Wi-Fi enabled device, such as a laptop, smart phone or portable media player.

Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan members can earn double miles on the new flights between San Jose and Austin through October 31. To qualify, customers must first register at alaskaair.com. Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan offers Super Saver Awards starting at 7,500 miles one way. Members of the American Airlines’ AAdvantage program, Delta Air Lines’ SkyMiles program, and 13 other airline partner programs, also can earn miles when they travel on Alaska Airlines.
