Strategic Airlines has become the newest operator in Australia’s domestic and international markets after being awarded its Australian Air Operators Certificate (AOC) by the country’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority on September 29.

The new airline can now launch commercial operations using its recently acquired Airbus A330-200, which arrived on Australian soil earlier this year. The achievement comes a month after Strategic Airlines received its French Air Operators Certificate, allowing the commencement of its Airbus A320 operations in Europe.

“Being awarded our Australian Air Operators Certificate heralds an exciting new phase in Strategic’s growth,” says Michael James, Strategic Airlines’ executive director. “This AOC is the culmination of a concerted group effort by our dedicated team, and we are very proud of the result. All of our people have worked tirelessly over the past 12 months, and it has certainly paid off.”

Brisbane-based Strategic’s Australian operations will primarily use the Airbus A330-200 to service an Australian Defence Force contract. The airline expects to add a further two Airbus A320 aircraft to its Australian AOC later this year. It will use one of them to operate the air service between Perth and Derby in the far north of Western Australia, a service regulated under a licence agreement issued by the State government.

New charter operator Strategic Airlines is basing two A320s and this A330-200 in Australia, and two A320s in Europe. Strategic has been awarded an Air Operators Certificate by DGAC, France's aviation regulatory authority. The airline also has been awarded an Air Operators Certificate by Australia's Civil Aviation Safety Authority

“The attainment of this AOC means that the Strategic fleet is now fully operational. We are a premium operator, and our aircraft are available for ad-hoc charter, ACMI lease and AOG coverage,” says James. “We are also exploring other selective market opportunities in Australia and overseas.”

(The airline-industry abbreviation ACMI is short for “aircraft, crew, maintenance, insurance” and is means an aircraft is leased along with its crew and with all maintenance and insurance arrangements covered. The abbeviation AOG means “aircraft on ground” and refers to the emergency need for an airline to charter another aircraft short-term and at very short notice when one of its own aircraft is grounded suddenly because of a technical problem.)
