Japan Airlines (JAL) is to codeshare on oneworld alliance partner American Airlines’ flights between New York and Sao Paulo.

Reservations and ticket purchasing for the Japan Airlines codeshare begin on October 28, subject to government approval. JAL will list American’s flight AA951 between New York JFK and Sao Paulo as JL5010; the flight departs JFK at 9:30 p.m. daily and lands at Sao Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport (GRU) at 10:15 a.m. the following morning, local time.

In the other direction, JAL will list American’s flight AA950 in its own timetable as flight JL5009. This flight leaves GRU at 11:20 p.m. and arrives at JFK at 6:25 a.m. local time.

Japan Airlines’ fleet includes 36 Boeing 777s, among them six Boeing 777-300s and 14 777-300ERs

There are three daily JAL-listed connecting flights in each direction between Tokyo and New York. Two in each direction are operated by American Airlines and one by Japan Airlines.

Between Tokyo Narita and JFK, JL006 departs Narita International Airport (NRT) at 11:10 a.m. and arrives at JFK at 10:00 a.m. the same day, local time. JL5014, operated by an American Boeing 777-200ER, leaves NRT at 7:20 p.m. and lands at JFK at 6:20 p.m. the same day, local time. From January 22, JL7008, also operated by an American 777-200ER, will depart Haneda International Airport (HND) at and reach JFK at 6:40 a.m. and reach JFK at 5:15 a.m. the same day local time.

Between New York and Tokyo, JAL’s own flight JL005 leaves JFK at noon and reaches NRT at 4:25 p.m. a day later, local time. JL5013, an American 777-200ER flight, departs JFK at 11:35 a.m. and lands at NRT at 3:35 p.m. the following day, local time. Fron January 20, JL7007, a flight operated by American Airlines, will push back at JFK at 6:10 p.m. in order to arrive at HND at 10:15 p.m. the following day.

Japan Airlines says the enhanced agreement between the two airlines will allow JAL to keep Sao Paulo in its international network despite the airline’s suspension of flights connecting the Brazilian city with Tokyo via New York.

JAL and American have also applied to the U.S. and Japanese authorities  for antitrust immunity to set up a proposed joint business for flights between North America and Asia. The two carriers recently gained a tentative approval from the U.S. Department of Transportation and last week obtained full approval for their proposed joint business from Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.

American Airlines and JAL already codeshare extensively on flights within the United States and Canada.
