Finnair starts flying daily to New Delhi on September 25.
The airline started flights from its hub at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport to New Delhi in October 2006 and up till now it has served India’s capital on a less-than-daily basis.
One reason Finnair is increasing its service frequency on the route is that, thanks to Helsinki’s geographical location on the great circle route, the flight time to Delhi is only 6 hours 30 minutes.
“Our route is the shortest between the EU and India, so it has found wide interest amongst travellers,” says Petteri Kostermaa, Finnair’s vice president of networks, strategy and planning.
Finnair is taking delivery of a fleet of 10 new Airbus A330-300s and over time the A330 will become the backbone of the airline's long-haul fleet, which flies from Helsinki to destinations in Asia and North America
Finnair’s route is the only direct connection from Northern Europe to Delhi. The airline is making sure its daily New Delhi servce has excellent connections to Delhi from Scandinavia, the Baltic Sea area and all of Northern Europe, with short flight times even from London and Paris.
In the Delhi-Helsinki direction, fast Finnair connections serve around 30 cities in Europe, the airline says, noting that in the other direction Delhi is one of India’s two biggest airline hubs and offers excellent connections to the rest of the vast Asian country.
